Li-Ning

Li-Ning is a leading Chinese sportswear company founded in 1989 by Olympic gymnast Li Ning, producing footwear, apparel, and equipment across basketball, running, and badminton categories. It has become a bellwether for Chinese brand international expansion via marketplace rails rather than traditional Western wholesale or physical retail channels. Listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, Li-Ning reported revenues of approximately RMB 27.6 billion (~$3.8 billion USD) in 2023, placing it as the second-largest domestic sportswear brand behind Anta. Its international growth strategy relies on Tmall Global, Lazada, and equivalent cross-border e-commerce infrastructure rather than the distributor agreements and flagship store buildouts that defined earlier Chinese brand internationalisation attempts — a model that trades margin for speed and data, while largely bypassing the wholesale buyer relationships that Western brands depend on.
